Cosy Comfort: Choosing Between Wide and Extra Wide Fit Slippers | DB Wider Fit Shoes (2024)

Finding the perfect pair of slippers is not just about style; it's about comfort and foot health. Slipping into the perfect slipper can feel like an act of pure indulgence but the importance of the correct fit can be much more far reaching that comfort alone.

In this guide, we'll explore the world of wide and extra wide fit slippers, helping you understand the differences, identify your foot type, and make the right choice for ultimate cosiness.

Wide vs. Extra Wide Fit Slippers: Unveiling the Difference

Whilst, in previous years, wide and extra wide footwear was not the norm, the UK’s average foot width is increasing and so many more of us are finding that we require wide fitting slippers. And with the increasing prevalence of conditions such as lymphedema and diabetes, so the need for extra-wide fitting slippers increases.

NEW TO OUR SHOES? Find out if you do need Wide Fitting Shoes.

What makes a slipper wide fitting?

Wide fit slippers differ significantly from high street sizes and even traditional wide fit shoes.

In its simplest sense, a wide fitting slipper is a slipper with more internal room that regular fitting slippers that you will find on the high street.

In addition to simply being wider though, DB Wider Fit Shoes slippers include features specifically designed for wider feet, or people with foot health issues.

Such features include back stiffeners for extra support, hard-wearing, substantial and stable soles that won’t go "floppy", the extra width to accommodate wider feet and problems like bunions and hammer toes, stretch panels to reduce rubbing and a variety of fastenings to ensure a secure fit.

Width fittings come in two main formats: There are “single width” fittings, such as 4E or 6E, and “variable width” fittings, which can be adjusted from one width to another through the removal of one or two cleverly designed removable insoles.

At DB Wider Fit Shoes, we offer wide and extra-wide fit slippers through our two variable width fittings:

  • 2V (wide fit) – suitable for people requiring EE to 4E width fitting. This already makes our “wide” fit wider and deeper than even the widest fitting offered by the majority of our competitors.
  • 6V (extra wide fit): Suitable for people requiring 6E to 8E and the widest and deepest slippers that you will find on the market.

What makes an extra wide slipper?

Our extra wide fit slippers, go beyond what is commonly available both in terms of width and also in terms of features.

Not only are they wider and deeper than standard offerings, ensuring a level of comfort not found in mainstream options, but they also include yet further specialist features for extra wide feet or for people with foot health conditions that cause swelling of the feet and ankles, such as lymphedema, arthritis and diabetes.

Our variable width fittings even make light work of situations where one foot swells more than the other, at any given time. Simply add or remove our specially designed removable insoles to increase or decrease the width and depth of just the affected slipper.

Importance of the Right Fit: From Standard to 6E and Beyond

Wearing slippers that are too tight or too loose can have a significant impact on your health. Not realizing you have wide feet might lead to purchasing larger sizes, creating trip hazards. For individuals requiring up to 6E slippers or 8E, our extra wide slippers provide a safer option, reducing the risk of falls, a leading cause of injury among the elderly.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, falls are a prevalent issue for older individuals and the lasting impact of a fall can be devastating. Correctly fitting slippers can be a life-saver, preventing injuries and preserving mobility.

Identifying the Right Fit for Your Foot Type

Determining whether you need wide or extra wide slippers is crucial for your comfort and safety so we always recommend using our Fit Finder to discover your actual size and width fitting requirement. Once you enter your measurements we will tell you your required width, such as 6E, and which fitting this relates to, such as 6V – which is suitable for people requiring 6E or 8E, which are our extra-wide fit slippers.

It is important to measure your feet occasionally since, as we age, or undergo certain types of illness, our foot shape, including width, can change. Many of us have not had our feet measured since our teenage years, when we found our adult size and stopped growing, but as our feet change as we age, it is important to ensure that we have correct fitting slippers for comfort and safety.

Slippers for Extra Wide Feet - Our Recommendations

Not only are our extra-wide slippers packed with features but they’re also free from animal products, so they’re totally vegan-friendly, and they’re also machine washable at 30°C.

For those with extra wide feet, here are some top recommendations:

Keeston is a classic slipper offering full foot coverage and adjustability, with a single touch-fastening strap for security of fit and ease of adjustment. With removable insoles you can change the internal room to accommodate swollen feet or for the insertion of orthotics, and the slipper opens up really wide for easy foot access.

Savannah is a cute yet traditional slipper in a pretty floral felt fabric that has a single touch fastening strap to open up really wide. The flexible, grippy rubber sole is ideal for surefootedness and the removable insoles allow you to increase the space in the slipper. Arthritis-friendly and ideal for feet that swell.

With twin straps, open toe design and extra wide opening, Ace 2 is the ultimate slipper for extra wide feet. It’s bunion and arthritis-friendly, and great for feet that swell. The twin, touch fastening straps can be adjusted individually to fit any foot shape and also easily tightened or loosened as required through the day.

Men’s slipper Edison has a seam-free stretch toe box that stretches to mould to the shape of your foot, providing extra room and reducing rubbing. The adjustable touch-fastening strap offers easy adjustment and a secure fit for a diabetes, arthritis and bunion-friendly slipper that is also great for feet that swell.

Adjustable Slippers for Men and Women

Adjustable slippers offer a solution to achieve a secure fit, accommodating the unique needs of each individual. With variable widths and adjustable fastenings, these slippers ensure comfort without compromising on style.

Our wide and extra-wide slippers offer adjustability in two different ways:

  • Adjustable fastenings: as mentioned previously, many of our extra-wide slipper styles come with adjustable touch fastening straps, that allow you to easily tighten or loosen your slippers throughout the day as required to ensure a secure fit.
  • To further adjust the internal room, our slippers come in our variable width fittings, as previously outlined, meaning that you can add or remove one or two insoles to increase the internal room of the slipper, or for the insertion of orthotics.

Whitby is an adjustable slipper for women, in a Mary Jane style with a single, adjustable touch-fastening strap and two removable insoles.

Men’s slipper Joseph is designed with extra-wide feet in mind. Extra-long twin elasticated straps extend to fit if your feet swell during the day and the slipper opens up extra wide for easy access.

Our final thoughts on slipper selection

In conclusion, choosing the right fit is paramount for comfort and safety. At DB Wider Fit Shoes, our large selection of extra-wide fitting slippers caters to various needs, providing slippers that not only look good but also prioritize your well-being.

Remember, the perfect slipper is the one that fits just right, offering the cosy comfort you deserve.
