💭 Why are Amish recipes so good?

Like I mentioned before, I really enjoy Amish and Mennonite recipes. I used to love to go to thrift stores and look for vintage recipe books (what can I say? I’m a food blogger).

I stumbled upon quite a few Amish cookbooks awhile ago and I’ve been a huge fan of Amish cooking and recipes ever since. Amish recipes are hearty, very tasty, and usually very easy to make.

🥣 What ingredients are needed for this recipe?

This recipe is pretty simple and you don’t need any fancy ingredients. To make this Amish pumpkin bread, you will need:

  • All purpose flour: The base of the pumpkin bread.
  • White sugar: To sweeten this quick bread.
  • Baking soda: To make the bread rise.
  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves: To give the pumpkin bread some spice.
  • Salt: You’ll need just half a teaspoon of salt.
  • Pumpkin puree: You’ll want to make sure you get pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. You can easily double this recipe, if you have more than one cup of pumpkin to use up.
  • Sour cream: I recommend using full fat sour cream for the best results.
  • Eggs: You’ll need two large eggs for this recipe.
  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter in this recipe so that you can control the amount of salt going in.
  • Vanilla extract: I recommend using pure vanilla extract, if possible.

You will also need a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.

⏲️ Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

  • Pour the mixture into a well greased loaf pan and then bake for 50 to 55 minutes at 350 degrees. A toothpick should come out clean from the middle once the bread is done.

💭 How many loaves does this recipe make?

This recipe makes one loaf.

📋 Can I freeze this pumpkin bread?

You can absolutely freeze this pumpkin bread. I recommend doing a double layer of aluminum foil if you’d like to a freeze a loaf. It’ll be good for up to three months in the freezer.

Wait…wait…wait…is this recipe AS IS (without Amish starter), or how much Amish starter should go in?

Hi Kara, this is an old fashioned Amish recipe not an Amish sourdough/friendship bread recipe. 🙂 hope that helps.
